Go.Compare's editorial guidelines
We’re here to help you make savvy financial choices. To support this, we provide guides, news, expert knowledge, and handy tips so you can find the right product at the right price.
Our editorial guidelines make sure the content we produce is accurate, trustworthy, and timely. When you compare with us, we want you to be in control. That’s why we equip you with everything you need to make an informed choice.
While we can help you save money, our editorial standards are built around helping you understand the full picture, not just the cheapest option. Our experts look at features, quality, and real-world value, empowering you to make savvier financial decisions.
While we do provide information to help you compare products, we don’t provide personalised financial advice.

Our editorial principles and values
All of our content, from our comparison tables to our product guides, embodies our values.
Fair
We’re impartial. We’re not trying to convince you to pick this car insurance or that credit card.
Only you know what’s right for you, and we want to give you all the information you need to make your own choice.Accurate
Our writers and editors have decades of financial services experience and are experts in their field.
We edit and review every page separately. This provides you with accurate and up-to-date information, supporting your decision.Transparent
We want to help you to make savvy financial decisions - so you need all the facts at your fingertips.
We always cite where we get our data from. And we’re honest about the fact that we can’t give you personal advice (because we don’t know your personal situation).
Our guides, articles, tips, and news articles all follow these principles:
- The main aim of our content is to help you make well-informed choices
- You’re entitled to reliable and balanced information
- We want to give you information in an easy-to-understand way
- We make sure our marketing communications and editorial content are obviously different
- Content is driven by helping you to make a savvy choice, not by how much money we can make
- Our content team uses an established process to make sure everything you read is of a high standard
How we compare products
When you use Go.Compare, product rankings are primarily based on price. However, we also show additional information such as excesses and key features to help you compare beyond cost.
Where available, we also show you Defaqto ratings for each product. Unlike customer reviews that are based on one person’s experience, Defaqto star ratings give you an objective review based on fact, rather than opinion.
As an independent and unbiased industry standard for financial products across the market, Defaqto ratings are the simple, reliable way to make a smart choice. Simply put - the more stars a product has, the more comprehensive its features and benefits.
Product order might vary depending on your individual details, such as your location, vehicle, or cover requirements.
While price is a key factor, we aim to give you the information you need to compare products on features, quality, and value - not just cost.
Commercial relationships do not affect editorial content, product explanations, or educational guides.
How we review and approve content
- Our internal team (or trusted partners we work with) write our content
- Once they have submitted it, our internal team read it first to make sure it hits the brief
- We share the content with one of our managing editors and they carefully review it for accuracy
- Our compliance team review the content
- Once our compliance team is happy, we publish the content
- We review pages regularly to make sure they remain accurate
All of our content is written and reviewed by at least two of our experts before we publish it. This extra pair of eyes is vital for making sure that all the data is correct and that we have carefully fact-checked technical information.
Where possible, we use internal data or our own research to support your decision-making.
Where we do link to external pages, we make sure what they’re saying matches our values. Our external sources include organisations such as the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), MoneyHelper, Defaqto, the Association of British Insurers, the Office for National Statistics (ONS), and government departments.
Our fact-checking process
Our fact-checking process starts with the writer. All our content producers undertake extensive research and only use reputable sources.
Once the content is drafted, one of our managing editors checks it over. They check all sources and verify the content.
While we might use internal tools or technology to support research, data analysis, or quality checks, responsibility for the accuracy, fairness, and tone of our content always sits with our human editorial team.
The last step in our fact-checking process involves sending the content to our compliance team for final approval. Only after moving through our fact-checking process is content published to our site.
We know what we’re talking about
We carry out annual Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as a part of the Insurance Distribution Directive (IDD).
This training is something that has to be completed by all individuals involved in insurance distribution every year and accounts for a minimum of 15 hours of learning and examinations.
Our experts undertake this full-on, in-depth course every year to stay aware of changing FCA rules and regulations around insurance distribution.
Completing this training means we can fairly say our experts are well-qualified to talk authoritatively and accurately about insurance topics.
Legal and compliance guidelines
When it comes to insurance, our content is always reviewed by our in-house compliance team to make sure it aligns with FCA guidelines.
They make sure our content is objective and fair, and that we follow the FCA conduct rules:
- You must act with integrity
- You must act with due skill, care and diligence
- You must be open and cooperative with the FCA, the PRA and other regulators
- You must pay due regard to the interests of customers and treat them fairly
- You must observe proper standards of market conduct
- You must act to deliver good outcomes for retail customers
Our commitment to accuracy
Everything we publish will be as accurate and thorough as possible. You're trusting us to help you make better financial decisions, and that isn't something we take lightly.
If you see anything on our site that needs another look, get in touch.
If we identify an error, we:
- Correct it as quickly as possible
- Update the page timestamp where relevant
- Review similar content to prevent repeat issues
We refresh content all the time
To make sure our content is up to date, we constantly review pages that feature any kind of data claim. We look at a different section of the site each month on a rolling basis to make sure the stats we have are the latest.
We review all core pages at least annually, and more frequently where pricing, regulation, or product features change.
We also regularly check things like Defaqto data, alongside data from external sources.
Our relationship with commercial partners
We don’t publish content based on commercial benefit. Some of the expertise in our guides and articles comes from external specialists - a few of these contributors are from companies we have a commercial relationship with, but others we don’t.
We sometimes team up if it means we can provide you with accurate and relevant information, to help you make the right choice.
We aren’t a spokesperson for these brands. While we sometimes share our content with them as a courtesy, they don’t have the final say on our content. And we don’t get paid for it either.
